Good morning,

A common question often asked is what is equine therapy and how does it work exactly?

I love waking up in the morning knowing I am off to the stables to be with my horses, something about that knowing calms me down; releasing an immediate sense of tranquility. If horses can do that for me imagine the possibilities it could have have for people with emotional, behavioral or mental blockages.

Carl R. Rogers wrote that “When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.” I believe facilitation assisted by animals and in my case horses, provide the most non-judgmental, empathetic, understanding and safe environment which allow people to change willingly.

You do not have to even like horses to have the sense overpower you. But according to, Lisa Esposito sitting within the confines of a traditional office, talking things out with a therapist between four walls, doesn't always work for kids and adults grappling with tough mental, emotional and behavioral health issues. For some people, adding equine-assisted psychotherapy may be an option. Just being with horses could feel more natural and nonthreatening – and you don't even have to ride.

HAPPY HEALING,

Katherine
